About this Workshop

Cryptocurrency or virtual currency is a much talked about medium of payment and investment which has been greeted with equal measure of enthusiasm and skepticism. This workshop is intended to provide an introduction to the concept of cryptocurrency and explores whether trustees should consider investing in cryptocurrencies as part of their trustees’ duties. The workshop will also discuss the practical challenges faced by trustees should they choose to invest in cryptocurrencies. Led by the foremost technology lawyers, Koh Chia Ling (OC Queen Street LLC) and Bryan Tan (Pinsent Masons) and Professor Tang Hang Wu from School of Law, Singapore Management University, this workshop promises to offer insights into the theoretical and practical difficulties of creating a trust over cryptocurrencies.

About the Speaker(s): 

Mr. Koh Chia-Ling – Managing Director, OC Queen Street LLC
Chia-Ling is a digital business lawyer trained in artificial intelligence (MTech KE, NUS) and Information Security (CISSP). He is the Managing Director of OC Queen Street LLC, a Singapore law practice and a member of Osborne Clarke’s international legal practice. As Managing Director, Chia-Ling leads a team of Digital Business lawyers, supporting businesses dealing in AI, FinTech, Blockchain, ICO, Cryptocurrency, ePayment, Cybersecurity, CleanTech, MedTech, PropTech, EdTech, ePlatforms, eCommerce, Social Media and OTT. His core practice is IP, IT, Data, regulatory, financial services and disputes. Chia-Ling’s Fintech work was recognised in the inaugural FinTech chapter of Who's Who Legal: Banking 2018. He has also acted in a number of high profile IT/IP disputes, the most recent of which were PropertyGuru Pte Ltd v 99 Pte Ltd [2018] SGHC 52, a copyright infringement case, and Main-line Corporation v United Overseas Bank Ltd [2016] SGHC 285, a patent infringement case.
 
Mr. Bryan Tan – Partner, Pinsent Masons MPillay
Mr. Bryan Tan represents major internet and software companies as well as governments and government entities and has led many industry firsts including the first mass e-mail defamation case in the world, Singapore’s first publicized telecoms competition dispute, a pan-Asian co-branded travel portal, the first privately-funded cable landing project in Singapore and the world’s first registrar-level domain name dispute. Since 2004, Mr. Tan is also named one of the leading individuals in IP, IT and telecoms law by Best Lawyers, Chambers, Legal500, Who’s Who and AsiaLaw. He is a partner at international law firm Pinsent Masons.
For the last 8 years, Mr Tan has also been a legal advisor to the ASEAN Single Window project and was recently appointed to the UN working party on paperless trade facilitation in the Asia Pacific. Mr. Tan is the author of Halsbury's Laws of Singapore - E-Commerce and Halsbury's Laws of Malaysia - E-Commerce (both editions). He also co-wrote the Singapore chapter of Electronic Evidence (three editions) with Prof Daniel Seng, the practitioner’s chapter in Data Protection Law in Singapore (both editions) and the Singapore chapter on The Comparative Law of Higher Education. He is also an editor for e-Discovery in Asia.
 
Prof. Tang Hang Wu – School of Law, Singapore Management University
Tang Hang Wu is a Professor at the School of Law, Singapore Management University where he directs the Centre for Cross-Border Commercial Law in Asia. His research interests include land law, restitution, equity, trusts, charity and non-profit law. Hang Wu has published widely, and his work has been relied on by all levels of the Singapore courts, the Royal Court of Jersey, the Caribbean Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Malaysia and law reform committees in the Commonwealth. In his capacity as a consultant at TSMP Law Corporation, he has advised members of the legal profession in Singapore and various Singapore government departments on complex legal issues. Hang Wu has also appeared as instructed counsel on numerous occasions before the Singapore Court of Appeal. Recently, he acted as an expert witness for the U.S. Department of Justice on Singapore trust law in relation to the case of General Sani Abacha, the second largest action brought under Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, involving over €100 million.

Ms. Chan Ee Lin – Director, Wealth Planning and Risk Management, Wealth Management Institute @ Nanyang Technological University
Ee Lin has 23-years of experience in C-suite and regional positions with leading private banks as an internationally recognised trust & wealth planner and family business governance advisor to high net worth families in Asia Pacific & Middle East. She has also been a top-rated lecturer and accredited curriculum developer for WMI@NTU and SMU for many years. Ee Lin started her career at the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Featured in CityWealth PowerWomen International Financial Centre Top 200 global list for 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, Ee Lin is has been a Resource Panel Member, Government Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Trade and Industry since 2009 and is Board member of the Worldwide Fund for Nature, Singapore and the Shirin Fozdar Program.
Ee Lin holds three degrees at Magna Cum Laude level: a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Stanford University; a Master’s degree in Business Administration in International Wealth Management from Carnegie Mellon University, Tepper School of Business; and a Doctor in Jurisprudence from Singapore Management University. She is an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore.
