Synopsis

Session 1: “Bridging the Gap between Financial and Succession Planning” (31 May 2022)

In this session, hear from subject matter experts how to connect an investment discussion with estate planning. Estate planning is not just about having a will. It is the interplay between a will, a trust and investment strategy to form a holistic plan for the family and their future generations.

Session 2: “Parties to the Trust Arrangement” (19 July 2022)

This session covers the roles and rights of a Trustee, settlor, protector, beneficiaries, excluded persons and investment managers. In this relationship, managing the expectations of all parties is an important success factor of a trust arrangement. This sharing will run you through some practical tips and takeaways from case laws and case studies.

Session 3: “Considerations in Setting Up a Family Trust” (11 August 2022)

This session explains some of the key considerations when a Patriarch or Matriarch considers a succession plan with a family trust. The jurisdiction of the trust is an important consideration, and it is the forum for parties to the trust interacts. The mental capacity of the Patriarch or Matriarch is key to ensure that family trust is validly set up to avoid contentious situations in the family. Finally, besides the trustee, who do you reach out to assist you in executing the family trust? What can advisors do to lend a hand to their clients?

Elizabeth 

Ms. Elizabeth Hart – Managing Director, Wealth Management Alliance Pte Ltd

Elizabeth has dedicated her entire career, of over 30 years, to advising private clients and provides holistic advice on wealth preservation, succession planning & family wellness.

Elizabeth is currently Managing Director of Wealth Management Alliance Pte Ltd, a multi-family office which provides independent investment services to fully align to clients and an incubator single family office.

Elizabeth is the CEO & Founder of Legacy Wealth Advisors Pte Ltd which provides independent succession planning services to support families to ensure a smooth transition of wealth to the next generation.

Elizabeth is also Managing Director of The Life Academy Pte Ltd, which provides bespoke family wellness programs and empowerment coaching to ensure harmony through generations and to prepare the next generation for being future wealth owners.

Previously, Elizabeth has held senior managerial positions including Managing Director, Head of South East Asia, Rothschild Wealth Management and Director, Rothschild Trust for 12 years until 2016. Elizabeth has been covering Asia for over 20 years. The industry awarded Elizabeth Banker of the Year in 2000.

Elizabeth, a UK citizen and Singapore permanent resident, is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, a member of the Singapore Institute of Directors and an Ambassador for WealthiHer in Asia.

 

Mr. Mark Farrell - Head of Trust, Butterfield Trust (Asia) Limited

Mark joined Butterfield in Singapore in 2020 and has been working in the private client industry for over 30 years, specialising in wealth planning and trust administration. Mark has extensive experience in dealing with multi-jurisdictional families and complex structuring for a wide variety of asset classes, including Private Trust Companies, commercial real estate, family office and art. In addition, Mark has helped families with their succession planning and probate issues, family governance requirements and philanthropic needs and has further managed a number of bespoke charitable trusts. During his career Mark has worked for banks, accountancy and law firms in the UK, including Coutts & Co and Charles Russell, before moving to Switzerland for 7 years where he worked for Credit Suisse Trust, covering the Asian and Middles Eastern markets. Mark moved to Singapore in 2014 with Credit Suisse Trust and has more recently been with BOS Trustee where he passed his vast knowledge and experience onto the families with whom he worked. Mark is a member of both the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and the Association of Taxation Technicians.


Mr. KK Lim - Managing Partner, Clayton Law LLC

KK's practice areas include cybersecurity, data protection, technology, employment, and private client advisory. Before joining the Bar, he spent close to 25 years in distinct roles with global MNCs, listed entities, and the Singapore Government. He is an alumnus of the University of Texas (Austin), Monash University Law School (Australia), National University of Singapore (Law Faculty) and Wealth Management Institute (NTU). He holds multiple technical qualifications and memberships in information security and audit. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Institute of Systems Science (NUS) and the Singapore Institute of Technology.

Ms. Sim Bock Eng - Partner and Head - Specialist & Private Client Disputes Practice, WongPartnership LLP

SIM Bock Eng is the Head of the Specialist & Private Client Disputes Practice and a Partner in the International Arbitration, Banking & Financial Disputes and Private Wealth Practices. Her main practice areas are in private wealth and civil litigation, which include family, matrimonial law, succession trusts and probate law, banking and finance, property and employment.

Bock Eng has over 20 years of experience in trust, estate and family laws – both front-end as well as litigation. She regularly advises ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families on succession and estate planning and business continuity.

Bock Eng is the current Chairman of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (Singapore) and the course co-ordinator for Probate in Preparatory Course Leading to Part B of the Singapore Bar Examinations. She is recognised as one of the leading probate, trusts and private wealth management lawyers in Singapore and has been involved in several landmark decisions.

 

Prof. Tang Hang Wu – Professor, Yong Pung How School of Law, Singapore Management University

Tang Hang Wu is a Professor at the Yong Pung How School of Law, Singapore Management University researching on property law, equity, trusts and non-profit law. He has published widely, and his work has been relied on by all levels of the Singapore courts and other Commonwealth countries. Hang Wu leads the Trusts & Private Wealth desk at TSMP Law Corporation, a boutique law firm in Singapore, and has advised local and international law firms, high-net-worth individuals, the US Department of Justice and banks and trust companies on trust law. Recent trust issues that he has advised on include trusts over cryptoassets, gold bars, real estate, company shares, a sustainable development fund in Papua New Guinea and offshore bank accounts.

Ms. Lee Ling Hui Lynette - Executive Director, Lion Trust (Singapore) Limited

Lynette has been with Lion Trust since 2010 and assists the high and ultra-high net worth private and corporate clients of Lion Trust across multiple jurisdictions in setting up of their trust structures.

Prior to joining Lion Trust, Lynette was a Risk Manager in UOB. During this time, she acquired valuable knowledge on compliance and risk management. Lynette was also previously with Foo Kon Tan Grant Thornton and performed internal and financial audits for both local and foreign businesses.

She is a member of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

 

Ms. Goh Seow Chee - Managing Director, Aequitas Advisory Pte Ltd

Before starting Aequitas, Seow Chee has spent more than 20 years in the tax and financial services industry specializing in tax investigation, trust and family succession planning. In the most recent years, Seow Chee has been sharpening her focus on family office space, supporting Singapore and international clients. Prior to founding her firm, Seow Chee was the Managing Director and Head of Wealth Advisory South East Asia at J P Morgan Private Bank, Singapore. She had previously held senior positions in HSBC Trustee Singapore and Equity Trust Singapore (now known as TMF Group). She started her career with Inland Revenue of Singapore as a tax investigator.
