This half-day workshop will deal with the following topics:

    - The Singapore framework for family offices

Ms Chan Ee Lin – Director, Tax & Legal, Family Enterprise Consulting, Deloitte Private

Ee Lin has more than two decades of experience in C-suite and regional positions with leading private banks as an internationally recognised trust & wealth planner and family business governance advisor to high net worth families in Asia Pacific & Middle East. Co-founder of a family office services company, she is a top rated adjunct lecturer and accredited curriculum developer at NTU and SMU, and started her career at the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Featured in CityWealth PowerWomen International Financial Centre Top 200 global list for 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, Ee Lin is has been a Resource Panel Member of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Trade and Industry since 2009, and is Board member of the Worldwide Fund for Nature, Singapore and the Shirin Fozdar Program at SMU. Ee Lin holds three degrees at Magna Cum Laude level: a BA from Stanford University; an MBA in International Wealth Management from Carnegie Mellon University; and a Doctor in Jurisprudence from SMU. A full-fledged TEP, she is an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore.

 

 

Ms Valerie Wu – Partner, Head of Tax & Trust Asia, Pinsent Masons

Since joining Pinsent Masons, Valerie has set up the tax and private wealth practice for the Firm for Asia, based in Singapore. In this capacity she advises families and individuals as well as services providers to such families and individuals. She acts as counsel to many families and their service providers in tax advisory, regulatory as well as tax controversy matters. In addition, she also advises ultra high net worth individuals and families, to tailor solutions and provide ongoing advice for tax and succession planning needs, balanced with commercial, family dynamics and business continuity considerations. Valerie is on the panels of and works with family offices as well as licensed entities such as trust companies, fund managers, private banks, wealth advisory teams for their cross border tax, regulatory and AML matters. Valerie was listed in Who’s Who Legal for Private Client for 2017 and 2018; and was also named in Legal Week's International Trusts and Private Client Elite since 2012 to date, a list of 100 private client lawyers and advisors worldwide tipped to be "at the top of their field. Most recently, Legal 500 listed the private wealth practice setup by Valerie as Band 1 for the 2018 and 2019 guides, & Who's Who Legal named her as a Leading Individual in their Private Client guide. Valerie has served on the Law Reform Committee since September 2016.

Mr Spencer Hsu – Deputy Director, Monetary Authority of Singapore

Spencer is responsible for the development of Singapore’s wealth management industry, as part of broader efforts in developing Singapore as an international financial centre.
Spencer has taken on a wide array of responsibilities in his time with MAS, including in banking supervision as well as consumer protection and dispute resolution policy development. He was also involved in setting up MAS’ Behavioural Insights and Culture Unit, which looks to employ psychology and behavioural economics principles to enhance policy implementation. On the financial sector development front, Spencer has been involved in manpower and financial research development efforts as well as developing Singapore’s renminbi market capabilities. Spencer was also MAS’ representative in Beijing, China from 2015-2017.
Spencer holds a degree in Social Sciences (with Honours) from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the National University of Singapore, where he majored in Psychology, and was also part of the University Scholars Programme.

Mr Anuj Kagalwala – Partner, Asset & Wealth Management Tax Leader, PwC Singapore

Anuj has 20 years of experience in a Singapore tax and business environment. He leads the Asset Management and Wealth Management tax practice in Singapore. He also leads the Family Office practice for PwC Singapore. Anuj is actively involved in discussing asset management and wealth management issues with the relevant authorities and industry associations. He has a close working relationship with all the key stakeholders. Anuj has provided extensive consulting advice to numerous family offices on setting up Singapore family office, Singapore investment platforms, applications for tax incentives and generally advising on trust structures and succession planning. Anuj is a member of the Singapore Institute of Accredited Tax Professionals. Anuj's key past and present family office clients include large families from Asia, Europe and US.
His clients in the wider asset management sector include regional as well global fund managers focussing on private equity, real estate, infrastucture and liquid trading strategies.

Mr Matthias Lee – Executive Director, UBS AG

Matthias Lee is an Executive Director with UBS AG and heads the trust administration unit for UBS Trustees, Singapore where he is also a Resident Manager. A lawyer by trade, Matthias joined the trust industry with over a decade of legal practice with local and international firms, as well as corporates and financial institutions. He has now close to 15 years in the trust industry. Matthias is an IBF Fellow, a Chartered Trustee, and active serving member of the STA Executive Committee. He is also a STEP TEP. For the past 6 years, Matthias also taught Wealth Planning modules in WMI's Certificate of Trust Services and Advanced Certificate of Trust Services.

Mr Ashley Ong – Managing Director, Lion Trust (Singapore) Limited

Ashley Ong is the Managing Director of Lion Trust (Singapore) Limited, an independent trust company. He has over 22 years of experience in the trust industry advising high net-worth clients and their families mainly in Asia such as China, Hong Kong, Republic of China, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia) on asset protection, succession, legacy and inheritance planning. He is also well versed in corporate restructuring and was involved in setting up several listed real estate investment trusts in Singapore. In Liontrust, Ashley is responsible for the overall business management of the company.
Prior to joining Liontrust, Ashley spent 12 years with one of the reputable global bank-owned trust company where he held several senior positions in the operations, client services and business development functions.
Ashley obtained his first degree majoring in Banking and Finance from Monash University and a Masters of Business Administration from National University of Singapore.

Ms Alyssa Toh – Head, Contact Singapore, Family Office Development Team, Singapore Economic Development Board

Alyssa is the Head of Contact Singapore, a division under the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) which advises business owners and entrepreneurs with business and residency interests in Singapore. She focuses on client engagements in diverse markets including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Alyssa concurrently leads the Family Office Initiative within EDB, where she is responsible for the development of policies and strategies to strengthen Singapore’s value propositions for global family offices.
Prior to joining EDB, Alyssa spent a number of years in private banking, where she held advisory roles to significant families from Malaysia and North Asia.
She graduated from the Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor of Business.

Ms Lee Wong – Head of Family Services Asia, Lombard Odier

Lee is responsible for leading Lombard Odier’s wealth planning and family services proposition, which is a key component of the Bank’s growth strategy in the region.
Before joining Lombard Odier, Lee amassed over 18 years of experience in the wealth management industry.
She joined from Union Bancaire Privée in Singapore, where she was Head of Wealth Planning for South Asia and was responsible for leading a team advising high net worth clients on their family wealth transition, family governance, as well as philanthropic aspirations.
Lee holds a Bachelor of Laws from the National University of Singapore. She is a Chartered Trustee appointed by the Singapore Trustee Association.
